Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)
A treatment for joint pain, tendinitis and many other conditions.
Whether it’s the result of an injury, condition, or disease, acute muscle tightness can cause severe nerve pain and loss of mobility. IMS is a technique that we effectively use to release the tight muscle and help relieve the pressure it may be putting on tendons, joints and nerves. The treatment involves inserting very fine needles into the affected muscle, thereby activating a reflex that causes the muscle to relax. This insertion also stimulates the body to increase circulation in that area, kick-starting the healing process and restoring normal function.
IMS can be used to treat these conditions:
- Achilles tendonitis
- Patellofemoral syndrome
- Shoulder injuries (including frozen shoulder)
- Patellar tendonitis
- Chronic tendonitis and bursitis
- Myofascial pain syndrome
- Patellar tendonitis
- Low back pain
- Neck pain and whiplash
- Plantar fascitis
- Sciatica
- Spinal disc problems
- Tennis/Golfers elbow
Using IMS to treat back issues.
If the muscles around your spine are tight, or inflamed, it can put pressure on the discs and joints in your spine resulting in a condition called Sciatica. IMS is a very effective treatment in situations like these, where the muscles around the spine and pelvis are difficult if not impossible to reach using other techniques such as massage.
REMEMBER: Every body is different, so be sure to talk with your Hawkstone physical therapist about your treatment and after care.
